Here is a brilliant angry rant by David Mandelzys, a Canadian Jew, against his parents for the Zionist message he was forcefed at his last seder. Some highlights:
Why, here in Canada, where we are a minority amongst a Christian majority, do we advocate for and support a ‘Jewish State’ in the Middle East, where the non-Jewish minority are treated as second class citizens?...
We see a sick hierarchically organized Jewish community that is not only serving as a smokescreen to allow the ongoing genocide of a people; we also see the twisted irony that you, our parents who claim we need Israel as a safeguard from anti-Semitism, are actually putting us and the rest of World Jewry in danger...
the Israeli leadership and its North American lobby are so in bed with the neo-cons that our community will be suffering consequences for years....
From the disenchanted, once isolated Jews, a new community is rising...The kids are coming home! All those ‘self-hating’ Jews who isolated themselves from the community not because of a dislike for our culture, heritage, or religion, but because they were told to leave after speaking their mind on the oppression of the Palestinian people, are finding each other, organizing, and coming back. [Emphasis mine]
Mandelzys ends a lot more hopeful than he begins. Good, so do I. The soul-searchers will be on stage at Yivo, and we're gonna be giving talks at AIPAC before long. I'm serious. There's going to be a healing. May take years though. Something's happening right now and you dont know what it is.... Thanks to Janet McMahon at WRMEA for hipping me to this.
jews are always self searching its what we do. Young people are always rebelling, its what they do. Some rebel by opposing israel, some by making aliyah, some by becoming atheists, some by joining Chabad.
The Jews will survive, Israel will survive as a Jewish state, there will be a two state solution and AIPAC will be seen by future historians as having enabled that solution.
Ive read your "anti-zionist" stuff, esp your belief that Obama is at bottom on your side. That will help me make my decision, now that Hillary is out.

"We have grown up now, and like our Christian peers who come to understand Santa Claus is not real, the growing majority of us have come to see myth of 'Israel the good' as a relic of our childhood Chanukahs.
"We are forming a new community, with a humanist core that ties us together strongly. Seders are being held that tell the story of the Palestinian enslavement along with that of our own. Events are being held where Jews celebrate Jewish culture from a place that recognizes how our history gives us a responsibility to speak out against oppression. We are committed to justice, and through this we are finding our Jewish souls."
-- David Mandelzys
Powerful stuff. Speaking out against oppression is a universal religious obligation. Setting up a nation-state is a secular project. Zionism should never have been allowed to conflate itself with, and hijack the soul of, Judaism. David Mandelzys is on a soul-retrieval project. Good for him!

Justayid,
I am a Zionist, and a confident supporter of Obama.
I am much more confident of Israel's thriving with Obama as president than with McCain.
Obama introduces skill and flexibility into his process, whereas McCain offers experience at being stubborn, not all that different from Bush.
Some add up that Bush/Cheney helped Israel's security. I'm not one of them.
I think the encouragement to annex via the wall, added up to a less defensible border than the green line would have been, and also that the current borders and relationships between Israel and Palestine result in a desparate Palestine that cannot magically be a good neighbor.
A Palestine that it permanently kept inviable, will never be at peace. There becomes no carrot to choose.

Phil is in the midst of a full-blown mid-life crisis? Here are the signs; his obsession with Israel (a country he admits he barely knows) and Jews (a people from whom he detached himself forty years ago) seem to all about showing up or getting even with mommy and daddy. As a sign of this, he becomes unhinged anytime a "young Jew" (young like you, Philip?) sticks it to the elders by being anti-Israel. Yet there are many ways to rebel, as justayid showed. In his day Phil smoked pot, joined the peace corps, screamed about "revolution" and dreamed of "a new age." Now he dreams mostly of chasing tatooed teenage ass behind his wife's back. But Jews, or more specifically hating what they do, keeps him in touch with his radical roots. That's why he becomes such a weepy schoolgirl around Obama--another figure onto whom he can project the fantasies of his youth.
In other words, the 60s are over, your parents will be dead soon, the girls think you're a creepy old pervert. GROW THE FUCK UP!

"The Jews will survive, Israel will survive as a Jewish state, there will be a two state solution and AIPAC will be seen by future historians as having enabled that solution."
"The Jews will survive"
Of course.
"Israel will survive as a Jewish state"
Given.
"there will be a two state solution"
Probably.
"AIPAC will be seen by future historians as having enabled that solution."
Hoo boy, you lost the plot there...

This is the first time I have heard such a compelling argument from the Jewish perspective. I thought I was the only Jew that felt this way.

Right on! And here I think I see a point of leverage for the remnants of the Jews.
There is a New Antisemitism bubbling up. New because it is rooted in contemporary reality, not in ancient grievances and superstitions.
Just as Clintons enabled the consolidation of the racist vote, by giving it permission, we Jews might be in a position to enable the outburst of the New Antisemitism, by giving it permission.
Far better for all that it happen now, rather than waiting for the jew bastards to get US to nuke Iran.

here is the comment i left on the angry jews website:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
maybe canada is way ahead of nyc, but i tend to doubt it. i think david's rhetoric implies a gross exaggeration of the numbers of his friends.
the real hope lies with the goyim. reading the comments on the ny daily news site i see more and more who are well informed and not afraid to speak their minds. it is our God given mission to reassure them that it is indeed ok.
no doubt this may piss off your loving mom and dad but thats where it is at. far better to piss off your folks than to face the wrath of Yahweh.

I read the comments at the end of your friend David's rant and it constantly amazes me how you radical anti-Zionist Jews (who have cut themselves off from the large majority of world Jewry, both inside and outside Israel) are so comfortable with virulent antisemites, both of the old "right-wing" or new "left-wing" varieties, both of which purvey the same kind of diseased conspiracy theories that led to so much violence against Jews in the past. Phil, every post you make convinces me more and more of the need for Israel to remain strong and not depend on the good will of those like Obama or other "progressive" Messiahs you attach your fantasies to.

"There's going to be a healing."
Not for the millions of dead and wounded there won't be. But "the community" is what matters.
If we did away with communities maybe we could become a nation again. But that would be inconvenient for Wall Street and the professional ethnics.
